Windscribe review
Windscribe is a VPN that can enhance your privacy while you use the internet. A VPN can hide your Internet Protocol (IP) address from the website you are visiting, and hide your browsing activity from your Internet Service Provider (ISP). This might be beneficial if, for example, you like to keep your political views private. Perhaps you do not want your ISP to know that you enjoy reading Leo Tolstoy, Murray Rothbard, Ludwig von Mises, Karl Marx, or whomever. Windscribe is reasonably priced, has a favorable no-logging policy, and has a servers in a variety of countries. You can even use it for free - 10 GB per month if you give Windscribe an e-mail address, plus an additional 1 GB per month if you sign up using my referral link. Affiliate Disclosure: I receive benefits if you use my referral link, which appears multiple times on this page. However, the benefit I receive is only in the form of being able to use more data per month on Windscribe, or receiving the same subscription you get if you sign up for a paid subscription to Windscribe.
Since many of my posts on this blog pertain to faucets and other ways of earning cryptocurrency, and most of these sites prohibit VPNs, please note that I am not recommending that you use Windscribe while claiming from faucets or otherwise earning cryptocurrency. I am recommending Windscribe in large part because of its browser VPN feature, meaning you can run Windscribe in a separate browser from your faucet claiming and cryptocurrency earning activities, and not system-wide. Additionally, if you like it enough and need more than 11 GB per month, I am recommending Windscribe as something you can spend your cryptocurrency on to enhance your privacy while doing other activities where VPN use is not prohibited.
What is Windscribe's no logging policy?
When VPN's have no logging policies, these are technically minimal logging policies - meaning they don't keep enough logs to connect a user's IP address with his or her browser habits, but they do keep enough logs to be able to run their service.
Windscribe's logging policy is very minimal. They do not keep a record of your source IP address, the websites you visited, or a historical record of your VPN sessions. They do keep a record of your total number of bytes transferred during the month (to enforce bandwidth caps for free users) and the timestamp of your most recent Windscribe activity (to weed out inactive accounts). There is also certain data that has to be known to the server while you are connected, but is discarded as soon as you end your connection. For the full privacy policy, read here.
Note that unlike some of the more expensive VPNs, Windscribe's no logging policy is not verified by a third party. However, Windscribe is generally considered a reputable VPN provider.
What are Windscribe's prices?
Windscribe is very affordable. You can even use up to 10 GB per month for free, as long as you give Windscribe an e-mail address. If you sign up using my referral link, you get an additional 1 GB per month for free, for a total of 11 GB per month. (I will also get an additional 1 GB per month of free data.)
If you want more than the free service, you can get a low-end monthly plan for as low as $2 per month. For $49 per year (which works out to $4.08 per month) or $9 per month (if you don't want to pay $49 all at once), you can get everything Windscribe has to offer.
For $2 per month, you can get unlimited data plus the use of one extra set of premium servers, or you can get an two extra sets of premium servers and an extra 20 GB per month of data. So if your free plan has 11 GB/month, and you choose two sets of premium servers, your $2 per month plan would have 31 GB/month. For $3 per month, you can get either unlimited data plus the use of two extra sets of premium servers, or three extra sets of premium servers and an extra 30 GB per month of data. And so on. A "set" of premium servers might include all the premium servers from a particular country (for example, Switzerland), or all the servers from a particular country except the ones suitable for viewing Netflix, or all the servers from a particular country that are suitable for viewing Netflix.
For $49 per year (which works out to $4.08 per month) or $9 per month (if you don't want to pay $49 all at once) you get unlimited data and can use all of the premium servers.
Note that for extra privacy, you can pay in cryptocurrency, based on current exchange rates. While even crypto isn't totally anonymous, this is more anonymous than giving Windscribe your credit card number.
Can I use Windscribe just in some browsers but not others?
Yes, but with some limitations. The Windscribe browser extension feature lets you do this. But the desktop app is system-wide and must be disabled if you want a particular browser to be able to access the internet without going through Windscribe. The browser extension is technically a proxy, not a VPN, but is typically referred to as a "browser VPN" anyway, and offers encryption, a choice of what server you want to connect to, etc. If you use both the desktop app and the browser extension, then Windscribe works as a two-hop VPN, which improves your privacy and security. If you use only the browser extension, then you lose the two-hop functionality.
If you enjoy claiming cryptocurrency from faucets, and doing other cryto-earning activities, I suggest making sure you have the browser extension feature installed in all your browsers and browser profiles except the one designated for earning crypto. Make sure you turn off the Windscribe desktop app before each crypto-earning session. When you want more privacy again, close your crypto-earning browser and re-enable the Windscribe desktop app. If you are using the free version of Windscribe, you might not want to use the desktop app anyway, so you can control your data usage more easily.
Summary
Windscribe is an affordable VPN, and even offers limited service for free. You can get an extra 1 GB/month for free if you use my referral link. Windscribe as a good no logging policy (technically a minimal logging policy), and can be used as a two-hop VPN for enhanced security. You can also choose to use Windscribe only in some browsers but not in others by using the browser extension feature, but if you do this, you can't use it as a two-hop VPN.
